Andrew Mentis Foundation Golf Day – 16th June 2019
Well the day finally arrived – The Andrew Mentis Golf day!
What a superb day with stunning weather (the south coast at this time of the year truly is fantastic) and a great bunch of golfers all in the aid of supporting our charity for the year.
Even though it was Father’s Day and a long weekend we still managed to get 114 players onto Umdoni Golf Course. The course itself was in immaculate condition and the greens proved tricky for us locals as the greens were far quicker than what we are used to. The day itself was supported well by local sponsors as well as some bigger name sponsors (SAB, Mugg & Bean, Diemersfontein, etc.). I think the highlight of the day was definitely the halfway stop, sponsored by Umthunzi Hotel and Conference, lamb on the spit into a fresh bun and side servings and then beers and Gin & Tonics if one desired. It certainly was a toss-up whether to start with our traditional Glenbrynth and Milk or go straight onto the taste inspiring G&T’s.
Before starting prizegiving we were lucky enough to have the Director and Co-Founder of Umduduzi there to have a chat to us. Tracey’s speech was short and to the point and it reinforced why we will be supporting them this year. They received a Gazebo and some flags for the day to enable them to host other events or outdoor promotions. The gazebo will go straight to one of the local hospitals play area for the children that can go outside for a bit to ensure they have some shade. We still have 9 months to raise funds for them and will be sitting with them in the next 2 weeks to finalise their requirements and see how we can get our fellow nomads involved.
The prizegiving started at 1715 and other than the usual prizes handed out we had our Auction Master Mr Paul Tedder help raise additional money for the coffers. He then went straight into being Fines Master as well and preceded to get more money out of the attendees (mostly the VC)! The day was won by Anba Pillay, Sageran Pillay, Thulani Ntobela and Mzwandile Petrol.
The famous set of TaylorMade clubs that were on raffle for the day was finally won by a local golfer (non nomad) – Mr H Strydom (CEO of Dolphins Cricket). I called him on the evening and I think still believes I am pranking him so will make arrangements to get him the clubs in the next day or 2 to prove we were not joking……
I just want to again say a big thank you to all the players for making the effort and supporting the day (even though it was father’s day), to the sponsors who made the day great – from the goodie bags to hole sponsors to our national sponsors, THANK YOU.
I will meet with our Match Secretary over the next few days to go through all the finances and report back on the amounts raised on the day.

LETTER OF THANKS FROM SCOTTBURGH GOLF CLUB
Dear Mr Lodder,
On behalf of Scottburgh Golf Club, we like to say a big thank you to Southern Natal Nomads, firstly for allowing us to host you, and secondly for the very generous donation of R 8,000.00.
In today’s difficult times, any help we as a club can get is hugely appreciated.
As discussed, we are in the process of purchasing a new greens machine, and the donation we received will greatly assist us in this regard.
Thank you once again and we look forward to hosting any future tournaments that the nomads would like to host at our club and we will ensure your experience at our club will be just as enjoyable.
